Ghana claim bragging rights over Cameroon

Ghana women’s national team defeated their Cameroonian counterparts 2-0 in an African women’s powerhouse contest of the Aisha Buhari Cup match at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.

Prior to the contest, both teams had shared a similar head-to-head record, with three wins and draw five times in their previous 11 meetings, including the recent 1-1 draw at the 2018 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.

Bouncing back from a 3-0 defeat to South Africa, the Black Queens were eager to end their campaign on a positive note, and eventually toppled their Central African foes, with now the most wins in 12 previous meetings.

Second half goals from Princella Adubea and Adjei Konadu were enough to hand Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo a morale-boosting win especially after losing the previous match to Banyana Banyana.

Both teams looked desperate in search for a win but could not find the back of the net despite creating a few chances, with the West Africans seeing more of the ball before the first half break.

After the recess, the Ghanaians showed more character in the contest and were eventually rewarded with a lead through Adubea’s brilliant finish in the 60th minute.

Tagoe-Quarcoo’s ladies didn’t take their foot off the pedal as they pushed for more until Konadu’s first international goal in the Black Queens colours at the death guaranteed their coveted triumph.

The win over the Indomitable Lionesses was Ghana’s first in the year 2021 and also marked a positive ending to their campaign at the Aisha Buhari women’s invitational tournament.

For the Cameroonians, Gabriel Zabo endured his second consecutive defeat in charge and the Lionesses remain without a win in four match in a row in 2021.

Cameroon are scheduled to face Central African Republic in the first round of the TotalEnergies Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifiers, while Ghana battle champions Nigeria in between 18-26 October, 2021.
